Is the security of the Senate truly at risk, or is this just a calculated distraction?
In a fiery and detailed statement, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano has fired back at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) over alleged security threats received by certain members of the Senate. But instead of instilling fear, Cayetano is raising serious questions about the credibility of the source, the selective sharing of information, and the suspicious timing of these "threats."

Perhaps the most explosive part of the statement is Cayetano’s direct attack on the NBI’s credibility. He questioned why the NBI is acting as the lead intelligence agency instead of the AFP, PNP, or NICA.

- Physical Altercations: NBI personnel allegedly attempted to stop an elected Senator from performing their duties, assaulted a Senate employee, and provoked an armed confrontation with Senate security where shots were fired.
- Loss of Neutrality: The NBI Director recently walked into a contested committee hearing and publicly declared which faction he deemed "legitimate," throwing neutrality out the window.
Cayetano’s verdict? "A clearly partisan NBI that was itself a party to violence within these walls cannot credibly appoint itself the guardian of our safety."
THE TIMING: A CONVENIENT DISTRACTION?
If you’re wondering why this "threat" is surfacing right now, Cayetano has a theory—and it points directly to the ongoing Blue Ribbon Committee hearings.
These hearings are currently pressing for answers regarding billions in flood control funds. Cayetano noted that the timing is too convenient. Just as the testimonies begin to corner certain names, a mysterious security threat suddenly appears to shift the national conversation away from accountability.
"Why does attention move away from the testimonies already heard by the Blue Ribbon Committee? Why do new controversies surface precisely when the hard questions begin?" Cayetano asked, echoing the sentiments of many discerning Filipinos.
PRODUCTIVITY OVER PANIC: THE SENATE WON'T BE SILENCED
Despite the drama, Cayetano emphasized that the Senate’s work must continue. He called for productivity to address the real issues facing Filipinos—such as the recovery of Mindanao from a major earthquake, the rising cost of fuel and food, and the struggles of farmers and fisherfolk.
He also called for prudence, stating that extraordinary claims require transparency and verification. "The surest test of whether a threat is genuine and not a pretext is simple—a real threat is used to protect the Senate’s work, never to suspend it," he stated firmly.
